Mead Honey WineToday I met a gentleman who is setting up a bee keeping business! I would never have thought that our conversation would come round to weddings, but it did! I learnt a lovely little fact relating to “Mead”, a honey wine simply made from honey, water and sometimes a little yeast. In Celtic cultures Mead was believed to enhance fertility and as such it found itself becoming part of Irish wedding ceremonies. Newlyweds would drink the honey wine on their wedding day and then every day for one full moon (a month) after their weddings. It is believed that this is where the term “honeymoon” came from!

I’m not sure whether couples would still drink the honey wine every day for a month after their wedding day, but some couples apparently do still have a mead toast as part of their wedding.

Will you be celebrating with a mead toast?
