Apple of My Eye Design

I came across Shelley from apple of my eye design last year whilst doing some research for clients. Shelley has kindly answered some Supplier Focus questions with regards to both her inspiration, her company and wedding stationery trends. Shelley has also provided us with some top tips to help you with your wedding stationery decisions which will be posted next Tuesday!

Where/ how did your passion for stationery design begin?

I have always had a love for art and design from a very young age. Growing up I was always to be found surrounded by felt tips and reams of paper covered in my ‘creations’. Following training in art and design at Nottingham Trent University I went on to complete a business degree and worked in industry for a time as a print buyer – all of which gave me a great foundation to build my own design business on.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I love to spend time on the fabulous Pinterest website. Nothing lifts my spirits quicker than a pinterest screen full of beautifully curated inspiring design images. I am inspired by the catwalk, colour trends, and have long taken inspiration from wedding cake trends. Presently I am loving paper cutting, I have fallen hook line and sinker for Rob Ryan’s work although I am yet to figure out whether and how to work paper cutting into my own ranges. Another great source of inspiration are design blogs, print and pattern is a big favourite of mine.

What’s the most rewarding element of what you do?

One thing and one thing only – sounds obvious, but it is a happy client. When I get emails and letters from my clients who have been blown away by their experience with apple of my eye design and take the time out to let me know. That’s what always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling!

What trends are you seeing for this year?

A continuation of the vintage feel – and it is understandable as it is such a timeless, elegant approach to take. You really can’t go wrong. It has evolved into the eclectic from the perfectly matched which I think is a natural progression.

“Prestwold”

“Grace”

Quirky, fun designs continue to grow in popularity reflecting the individuality of the couple marrying, with a move here away from traditional ivory shades to something a little bolder.

“Dotty About You”

“Filigree”

Into 2011 there is a move toward a simpler, cleaner aesthetic. Here layout and typography become the star of the show, attention to detail and design are paramount.

“Damask Flourish”

What is the most bizarre/ unusual/ challenging request you have had?

I think it was to bring together a Yorkshire Terrier, Robin and wedding rings in a wedding design! That is as much as I can say on that front without getting flashbacks!

How can excellent quality and well designed stationery make a difference to a wedding?

From start to finish, stationery sets the scene for the wedding. From the moment the Save The Date or Invitation drops on your guests’ doormat their expectations for the wedding to come are set.

Thank you so much Shelley for taking the time to tell us about your inspiration and your thoughts on wedding stationery trends!
